She possessed the classy sensuality of a Taishō-era belle: round features and milky skin, short dark hair always kept in luscious curls, lips that sparked hot restlessness with a touch of dark lipstick. Having attended modelling school in France, she would have started a lucrative, glamorous modelling career in Japan had she not decided to marry into the Hazama family.
Her husband and the household's servants all knew of her commitment to beauty care, but when she became pregnant with the couple's only child, her routine got even more complicated. She would break her fast on congee with lotus seeds and red dates, have bird's nest for dessert, bathe in milk sprinkled with chrysanthemum petals, and start taking pearl powder capsules before bed once the pregnancy was far enough along.
"Our baby has received blessing from the moon," she reasoned one evening, shortly after one of her nightly milk baths. "It wouldn't be right to not honour the blessing the best we can. Besides, don't you want our child to be as beautiful as the moon that night?"
Takeo placed a hand on her abdomen and said, "The baby could be a boy, you know."
"Then let it be a beautiful boy," Mitsuki replied. "Or do you want the baby to look like you?"
They both laughed.
